She is a riding enthusiast who owns an array of Andalusian horses. In the 2000s, Derek voiced her strong opinions on animal welfare rights, specifically in the horse slaughter. The actress also spent her investment money to publish her autobiography entitled Everything That Matters in Life I Learned from Horses.
