The ‘90s was an interesting period for Academy Awards fashion. While there may be an Oscar award for Best Costume Design, red carpet outfits that seem like they were plucked out from a movie’s costume department are oftentimes frowned upon.

Hence, Juliette Binoche had everyone’s eyebrows raised when she appeared in a brown velvet gown that made her look like she just arrived from the set of a fantasy-themed movie. Thankfully, her outfit did not have any effect on her acting credit and she still took home the Best Supporting Actress Award.
